The University of Queensland (UQ) Strategic Plan highlights the need to attract and retain the best researchers from all over the world and develop our capacity to invest in the best research talent. UQ Amplify is a key component of this aim, representing an institution-wide approach to attracting, retaining and developing externally-funded Fellows. UQ Amplify:

  • Coordinates and unifies the University’s investment in externally-funded Fellows;
  • Positions UQ more competitively in the sector as a destination for externally-funded Fellows;
  • Enhances career development for fellows through an appropriately-scaled active involvement in Teaching; and
  • Enhances career pathways for externally-funded Fellows.

For eligible externally-funded Fellows, UQ Amplify provides for:

  • A fixed-term contract at UQ following conclusion of their externally-funded Fellowship subject to the UQ Amplify assessment process
  • Access to the University’s teaching program through an agreed teaching portfolio.

There are two streams of UQ Amplify, transitional and mature, representing the progressive roll-out of this new initiative:

  • For eligible ARC/NHMRC/AQ fellows in rounds for funding prior to 2020 (for example 2019 ARC Future Fellowships; 2018 Advance Queensland Industry Research Fellowships; 2017 NHMRC Career Development Fellowships) the transitional stream of UQ Amplify applies, which does not require a Teaching Plan to be implemented during the external Fellowship term. This is outlined in the UQ Amplify Guidelines for Existing Externally-funded Fellows.
  • For eligible ARC/NHMRC/AQ fellows in rounds for funding in 2020 onwards (for example 2020 ARC DECRAs; 2020 salaried NHMRC Emerging Leadership Fellows), the fully mature version of UQ Amplify applies, which requires implementation of a Teaching Plan (for the equivalent of 20% of the Fellow’s FTE to be provided in teaching capacity) during the term of the external Fellowship. This is outlined in the UQ Amplify Guidelines for New External Fellowship Applicants.
