Overview

The University of Queensland (UQ) values equity, diversity and inclusion and has developed a number of networks and programs to support these key priorities and objectives. UQ recognises the impact of parental leave as primary caregiver on the continuity of women’s (and in some cases, men’s) academic careers and in the underrepresentation of women among senior academic appointments. The loss of research momentum associated with parental leave may have long-lasting effects on career progression, and may discourage women from returning to academia after a career break.

The UQ Amplify Wo[men]’s Academic Research Equity (AWARE) Program is intended to lessen the impact of periods of parental leave on UQ researchers who have been successful in obtaining an externally-funded research Fellowship, and for whom a career interruption would be a significant setback at a critical point in their career trajectory.
