The Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) farewells Ian Harris after many years of valuable service to the University, and is pleased to announce the appointment of Joe McLean as the new Director, Research Partnerships.

Joe McLean will commence as Director Research Partnerships effective 28 February 2018.

Joe is currently Head, Strategy and Growth, Triple P International Pty Ltd, and is well known at UQ through his previous roles, including as Director, UQ International Development (2014-2015), prior to which he held a variety of roles at UniQuest (2002-2014).

As Director, Research Partnerships Joe will provide strategic and operational support to industry-facing funding schemes and ensure UQ is well positioned to adapt to changes in the policy environment that affect partnerships.  Joe has spent 20 years working at the interface of research and industry/government.  He has experience project managing Cooperative Research Centre proposals, and has helped facilitate numerous research partnerships between UQ researchers and a variety of private sector, government and NGO partners.  He has also managed the commercialisation of a number of UQ discoveries, including Latch-on and Leximancer.  Additionally he has worked closely with government departments to secure funding for major research centres. Joe will commence on 28 February 2018.

UQR&I also wishes to acknowledge Ian Harris for his valuable contribution to the University, most recently in the role of Director, Research Partnerships. Ian will retire from UQ effective 2 March 2018.

Ian has had a long and distinguished career.  His professional career spans more than 40 years and has included senior management roles in international education and faculties in several Australian universities.  He was responsible for the establishment of the IDP Education Australia office in the Philippines and in subsequent leadership positions in international education at The University of Sydney, The University of New England and The Australian National University he played a major role in the early development of the international education export programs that are now so important for all Australian universities. 

Ian’s first role at UQ from 1997 was as Faculty Executive Officer for the then Faculty of Natural Resources, Agriculture and Veterinary Science. Prior to taking up his appointment in UQ’s research portfolio in 2006, Ian was the Chief Operating Officer for the ARC Centre of Excellence for Integrative Legume Research headquartered at UQ, one of the eight first-round ARC Centres of Excellence established in 2003.

As Director, Research Partnerships he has facilitated many major partnerships on behalf of the university and has had responsibility for governance and management of the university’s involvement with Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs).  Most recently he was integral to the movement of the Boeing Research and Technology Australia Brisbane Technology Centre to the university’s St Lucia campus, dramatically increasing our researchers and students ability to engage with a global innovator.
