On Thursday 25 May 2017, the NHMRC announced significant changes to the structure of its grant funding program, introducing Investigator Grants, Synergy Grants, Ideas Grants and Clinical Trials and Cohort Studies Grants.

The NHMRC Project Grants, Program Grants and full suite of Fellowships schemes have been replaced. Archival information on these schemes can be found below.

Project Grants

Project Grants were for single investigators or teams of up to ten chief investigators (CIs) to support the creation of new knowledge by funding the best investigator-initiated research project plans of between one and five years, in any area relevant to human health.

Project Grants have now been retired with Ideas Grants most analagous.

Program Grants

Program Grants provided support for teams of researchers to pursue broad-based, multi-disciplinary, and collaborative research activities. The scheme provided support for biomedical, clinical, public health, and health services research and was typically for five years.

Program Grants have now been retired with Synergy Grants most analagous.

Fellowships

The NHMRC provided salary support funding for individual researchers, ranging from early- to mid-career researchers (Early and Career Development Fellowships), established research leaders (Research Fellowships) and clinical, public and allied health researchers (TRIP and Practitioner Fellowships) and targeted Fellowships for Dementia Research.

These schemes were provided tailored funding models from two to five years, depending on the Fellowship.
