The Engagement and Impact Assessment (EI) is an exercise which aims to assess how well we are engaging with end-users of research and show how we are translating our research into economic, social, environmental, cultural, and other impacts. EI promotes greater support for the translation of research impact within universities. The results are also used by universities to promote their strengths in engagement and impact to a range of stakeholders.

EI was introduced in 2018 as a companion exercise to ERA - Excellence in Research for Australia, our national research evaluation framework, which identifies and promotes research excellence in Australia’s higher education institutions.  Alongside ERA, EI aims to capture the non-academic benefits of university research for end-users. Together, the programs demonstrate the richness and diversity of Australia’s university research landscape.

ERA and EI provide a unique avenue to understand the performance of Australia’s universities and the evolving landscape of Australia’s university research. This information is used by universities, students, industry, government, and other stakeholders for a variety of purposes, including strategic planning and policy development.

From science and sustainability to health and humanities, UQ research has impact and creates value that translates into real-world benefits - benefits for our local community, Australian society, and globally.

To achieve research impact, you may engage or work closely with our local communities, link through to the national industry priorities, or develop deep global collaborations and networks. UQ is collectively undertaking courageous and cutting-edge work and actively supporting the creation of research impact in so many ways and via diverse translation pathways.

The next Engagement and Impact assessment is being conducted in 2024 and we want to demonstrate the significance of UQ’s engagement and impact again with the help of our researchers. If your research is creating and delivering impact, we hope you'll consider contributing to UQ’s Engagement and Impact 2024 submission. UQ will submit multiple representative impact case studies across all Fields of Research. To meet the EI 2024 eligibility criteria we are seeking examples of UQ Research Impact that occurred between 2017 and 2022, with the associated research completed between 2008 and 2022.

If you know about a research impact that could form part of UQ’s submission, follow the link below to the Expression of Interest form and tell us about your research impact!
