The objective of the Synergy Grant scheme is to support outstanding multidisciplinary teams of investigators to work together to answer major questions that cannot be answered by a single investigator. A Synergy Grant offers teams of between 4 – 10 chief investigators a fixed, five-year $5 million funding package to addresses major problems in all areas of human health and medical research, from discovery to translation. The scheme fosters highly collaborative teams of diverse researchers, including by gender, career stage, and cultural background.

How to apply

Internal notice of intent process

All researchers intending to submit an NHMRC Synergy Grant for funding in 2020 are required to submit an internal Notice of Intent. NOIs will be collated centrally and distributed to Faculties and Institutes in order to provide maximum support to the UQ research community.

Step 1. RGMS updates and scheme reading

  • Update your full profile and CV in the NHMRC granting system, RGMS. Investigators new to the NHMRC need to submit a user request via the NHMRC system login page.
  • Familiarise yourself with the key National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), External Funding Organisations and UQ documentation.

Step 2. Completing the application

Step 3. UQR&I internal review and feedback

  • Ahead of internal review, ensure all online components are complete/valid and generate your proposal snapshots in RGMS.
  • To initiate internal review, email your completed Funding Coversheet to UQ R&I at
  • Also provide completed UQ Certification Proforma.
  • Internal review by UQ R&I/feedback provided (compliance/eligibility/grantsmanship).

Step 4. Final submission

  • Final submission by UQ R&I to NHMRC.
